Compost Club at Alton Darby Elementary

Hilliard’s Alton Darby Elementary School’s Compost Club is in its second official year. Thanks to some special Cub Scouts and their parents, they have also maintained compost piles for the past four years. “Compost Club” is, however, a loose title for a group of students that helps organize and run the recycling, composting, gardening, and weeding programs at the school. They are the main cheerleaders for the school’s environmental health. Mrs. Kleman, a second grade teacher, and Becky Bowers, the art teacher, consider this club a...

Big Darby Creek is one of the most biologically diverse aquatic systems in the Midwest, and when Bradley High School opened its’ doors to students in 2009 the unique environmental features also opened opportunities for the students. The rain gardens, wetlands, and associated wildlife, provide outdoor biology laboratories for students interested in environmental or biology-related college majors. During the design phase of building construction, the school followed guidelines set by the Big Darby Accord to preserve the area’s...

Tom Baker & Associates make going green a priority

When you’re in the insurance business like Tom Baker, there are sometimes so many forms and contracts involved in a claim that when printed, the paper can stack up to higher than an inch.   “If we never even print that out, it’s big,” said Baker, whose Hilliard-based insurance agency went paperless five years ago.   Not only was going green a priority for Tom Baker & Associates, it was something that was almost mandated by the insurance industry, which for the last 15 years has been promoting online archival, email approvals and...

Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle with Cartridge World

The three R’s of sustainability (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle) are the foundation of Alan Horvath’s business. As the owner of Hilliard’s Cartridge World, Alan began collecting used printer and toner cartridges and refilling them in 2007.   Since then, the store on Hilliard-Rome Road is the busiest store of its kind in the Columbus area, helping to make curb the number of cartridges that are thrown away every second in the U.S.—which is estimated at 8.   “We’ve been really well supported by business and groups here (in Hilliard),” said...

Going green is a family affair at the Dush household

Parents Diana and Greg and children Charlie, 7, and Caitlyn, 5, all pitch in when it comes to living sustainably. “It is something I think we can all do better at, so we’re always looking for new ways to be green,” said Diana, who took the pledge to Go Green with Hilliard’s Environmental Sustainable Committee because of its mission to inform residents about green practices—although the family already does plenty to preserve the environment. Avid recyclers, the Dushes take advantage of Hilliard’s curbside recycling program. Inside their home,...

Hilliard library branch implements larger paper recycling bins

Libraries have been engaging in earth friendly practices since long before the concept of “going green.” After all, reducing, reusing and recycling are the hallmarks of environmental sustainability and libraries make books available for the entire community to share. But that doesn’t mean Columbus Metropolitan Libraries, including the Hilliard branch, have stopped there. “We’re always looking to conserve, and right now we’re really big into recycling paper,” said CML marketing director Gregg Dodd. In December, the Hilliard Branch added large...

Central Ohio Dentist Associates installs solar panels

In November 2010 and again in December 2011, dentist Sudhir Sehgal made some changes that will keep his offices environmentally friendly for the next 25 years—no daily effort required. During those months, he installed $100,000 of solar panels on his Central Ohio Dentist Associates offices in Hilliard, Columbus and Reynoldsburg. The rooftop panels can collect up to 25.5 kW of solar energy from the sun’s rays and store it for later use. “It just made sense,” he said, explaining his decision to switch to renewable energy. “Sunlight is free and...
