August 19, 2015As the temperature rises, it’s important that we take a look at our water usage. Conserving water helps the environment, reduces strain on our water and sewer systems, and keeps money in your pocket. Here are five easy ways you can help conserve water around the home:
- Fix any leaks. Even small leaks can waste significant amounts of water each day. In addition to fixing leaks you can see, use your water meter to check for leaks you may have missed. If you know you will not be using water for a few hours (e.g., if no one will be home), check your water meter before and after. If it moves even when no one is using water, you likely have a leak somewhere!
- Water your lawn wisely. Water your lawn only when needed (1″ of water per week is usually all that’s needed to keep a lawn healthy). And when you do water your lawn, do so in the early morning when it’s cool. Also, allowing grass to grow a little bit taller will promote better water retention in the soil.
- Use your dishwasher and laundry only when full. Automatic dish and clothes washers should be used only when full for optimum water conservation. Also, with modern dishwashers, it’s usually not necessary to pre-rinse dishes.
- Use a commercial carwash that recycles water. Many commercial carwashes recycle water. If you do wash your car at home, use a nozzle for the hose so that you don’t run the water more than necessary.
- Use a broom, not a hose, to clean patios and walkways.
