October 14, 2014Big Green Head (BGH) is a Columbus-based social enterprise, which diverts resources such as household electronics, styrofoam, and food scraps from landfills. The organization also provides school and community programs to help educate about sustainability practices.
Ultimately, BGH is all about the community! The business started to serve a grassroots need in the community and continues to engage with the public through events that educate, entertain, and encourage green practices. Big Green Head does children’s crafts at farmers markets; promotes local, green businesses; provides recycling containers and volunteers for green events; and organizes community clean-up days.
Recently, BGH helped establish the Zero Waste Cafeteria Program at Evening Street Elementary in Worthington. In the 2013-2014 school year, BGH helped this school divert over 17,000 lbs of food waste! Of this waste, 14% was diverted to a local food pantry and the other 86% was composted! Combining all of BGH programming to date, approximately 175 tons of materials have been diverted from the landfill!
