Go Green Hilliard — Energy Conservation Tips
October 21, 2019Top Holiday Sustainability Tips Brought to You by Go Green Hilliard
December 20, 2019The Plastic Cap and Lid Collection is Well Underway, and We Have an Amazing Update!
Back in May, the Hilliard Environmental Sustainability Commission (ESC) called on the community to start collecting plastic bottle caps and lids with the goal of purchasing benches made from 100% recycled material to be dedicated at the City’s Earth Day celebration on April 25, 2020.
You responded in a big way!
On Saturday, ESC members and Girl Scout Troop 229 spent several hours sorting through and weighing thousands of caps and lids that Hilliard families, schools, churches, groups, sports teams and businesses have collected and dropped off at the Community Center over the last six months.
We are excited to announce that so far, we have sorted 420 pounds of caps and lids, and we are not done yet! We will be back at the Community Center on November 23 to finish up what we believe to be another 300 pounds.
We are thrilled at the participation and want to thank everyone for supporting this project. A special shout out goes to Girl Scout Troop 229 for helping us weigh and sort. Please keep on collecting through Saturday, December 28, 2019, which is also the date of our post-holiday Styrofoam collection.
A few friendly reminders:
Plastic drink bottle caps are what we are collecting. Think Gatorade, water bottle, and drink bottle plastic caps; as well as lids/tops from coffee cans, peanut butter jars, butter tubs, ketchup bottles, and tops from deodorant and liquid laundry detergent. We accept caps and lids that are recycle numbers 2, 4, or 5. We cannot accept metal, pumps, or fast food cup lids, any lid that is more than 8 inches in diameter, or items with food debris. Additionally, we do not accept anything that is not a cap or a lid. Other plastic items such as toys and contact lens cases are not accepted.
If you have questions, just send a comment through our website or FB page. For more information on the cap and lid program, including more examples of acceptable caps and lids, please see https://www.greentreeplastics.com/abc-program/
