Summer Lawn Care Tips
July 13, 2020UPDATE: Tom’s of Maine Natural Care Recycling Program
August 18, 2020From Hilliard ESC member Kim Movshin:
What have you been up to during quarantine? My family has been cooking more than ever and growing vegetables since we are all home and have the time. It was bothering me that we were putting so many food scraps into the garbage. I decided we should start composting. The timing was perfect because a friend was upgrading her compost bin and gave me her old one.
It has been an adjustment not throwing food scraps into the garbage but we are finally getting there. We keep a small, lidded collection container on the kitchen counter and empty it every few days into the compost bin. When we empty the collection container, we spin the bin. The worst part of this process is opening the compost bin as there are so many gnats inside of it. We hold our breath, dump, and close the lid vey quickly. We found that by adding dirt and worms the smell and number of gnats are significantly reduced.
Stay tuned for my family’s composting progress and other environmentally friendly activities we are doing during quarantine.
