New Recycling Opportunities in Hilliard
October 24, 2021America Recycles Day: Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow
November 15, 2021This year, the City of Hilliard is kicking off a new collection – between October 29 (the day after Hilliard’s Trick or Treat) and December 3, you can drop off your pumpkins just east of City Hall (behind the old Steve Stivers building) where the city’s composting bins are. There will be a continuous supply of low-walled 20 yard open-
top dumpsters by the composting bins for all your pumpkins.
What happens to the pumpkins? They will be transferred to the London Correctional Facility to be thoroughly smashed for their large composting program. Can you compost them yourself? Yes, but due to their size and density, they must be thoroughly smashed or else they’ll just rot. Can you put them in your solid waste can? Yes, but it’s so much better to keep them out of the landfill. Can you put them in your yard waste stream? No, they are not considered yard waste, but a food. So bring them to the city’s collection point and check out the composting bins as well.
Again this year, SWACO is collecting yard signs (not just political signs, but all paper and plastic signs) on Saturday, Nov 6 from 8 a.m. to noon at the Bill McDonald Athletic Complex located at 4990 Olentangy River Road, just south of Bethel Road. It is free, and the metal stands are also accepted.
