April 7, 2013Now that winter is over and the last piles of snow have melted away, it’s time for everyone to return to enjoying outdoor activities. The Heritage Trail, which connects Old Hilliard to Cemetery Pike Road in Madison County, is seven miles long and has much to offer for bikers, runners, and walkers alike.
This multipurpose trail is nicely paved, which provides a smooth surface for users to enjoy as they travel through neighborhoods, woods, and farm fields. The trail not only provides a means for transportation and exercise, but can also be a serene retreat for viewing wildlife, especially in the quiet morning hours. As its full name implies, the Heritage Rail Trail was constructed along the site of abandoned railroad track.
Choosing to participate in outdoor activities rather than going to a gym during the warmer months has a beneficial impact on our environment. Many outdoor activities can be performed at or near home, rather than having to drive across town, which helps reduce pollution caused by vehicles. Many Hilliard residents are close enough to the Heritage Trail or other bike paths that they can easily ride their bikes or walk to the trail, and do not need to turn on their vehicles. Being outside and enjoying the fresh air also helps the environment by reducing the amount of energy consumed by air-conditioning units both at home and at gyms. And of course, there many health benefits to being active in the great outdoors – just remember to wear sunscreen!
