America Recycles Day: Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow

Today – November 15th, America Recycles Day is coming to a close, but that’s not the end of our chance to recycle! (Be sure to drop off your pumpkins at 3800 Municipal Way!)

On America Recycles Day 2019 (November 15), EPA recognized the importance and impact of recycling, which has contributed to American prosperity and the protection of our environment. The recycling rate has increased from less than 7 percent in 1960 to the current rate of 32 percent. An EPA study found that recycling and reuse activities in the United States accounted for 681,000 jobs and $37.8 billion in wages.

ARD roots go back to the state of Texas. Yes, we owe the great Republic of Texas for the seeds of a national celebration for recycling. Texas Recycles Day began in 1994 as the brainchild of two employees at the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality: Kevin Tuerff and Valerie Davis. Their idea was to promote recycling through a six-week campaign to boost recycling in the state. They needed a day that was far enough away from Earth Day (April 22^nd), but didn’t compete with election day or the holidays – November 15^th was chosen.
