On Earth Day 2016, the City of Hilliard announced a new partnership with the local energy management software company, Jade Track.  Using utility monitoring devices, Jade Track began to collect real-time data for electricity  and natural gas usage at City-managed buildings. These buildings include the Community Center, Senior Center, Hilliard Family Aquatic Complex, and the overhead lights at the Municipal Park baseball and softball fields. (School buildings are managed by the School Board.)

Data collected has been used to help decision-making about capital improvement projects to reduce the City’s consumption of energy resources.  One such project was the replacement of 24 metal halide light fixtures in the Community Center gym with 24 LED fixtures connected to an occupancy sensor.  The new LED light fixtures dramatically reduced electricity usage. And using data collected through Jade Track, we have been able to estimate that the lighting improvement will pay for itself with energy savings within 3 to 4 years.

Another component of the Jade Track partnership is 24/7 monitoring of the City’s energy usage.  When unusual patterns or spikes appear, Jade Track notifies City representatives of the issue.  This allows us to determine if there is a good cause for the energy spike (such as a special event at that location), or if there is an issue that needs to be addressed.  This reporting allows the City to address any problems as quickly as possible before they result in unnecessary increased energy usage and utility costs.

The live data is available to the public through this website and on monitors in the lobby of both City Hall and the Community Center. Check them out next time you’re there!
