Well, our seeds have been planted!
Before we arrived, Councilman Pete Marsh (and fellow community garden supporter) helped prep our plot by tilling it and mixing the existing soil with peat moss and cow manure. This saved us a lot of time with the shovel, so thank you, Pete! (Don’t have a power tiller? Check with your local hardware or garden store about renting one.)
Next step was planning which plants would go where. We had corn, tomatoes, carrots, green beans, peppers, cilantro, sunflowers, and marigolds. Some of our crops will eventually be pretty tall, so we wanted to orient our rows so they won’t create too much shade for the other plants as they grow. We marked our rows and made sure they were spaced far enough apart for each crop.
Then it was just a matter of digging some holes and dropping the seeds. We just followed the directions on the packaging for depth/spacing and did our best to loosen up the soil.
Last step, add some water, which felt nice on a hot day!
From here, we’ll continue to water as necessary and watch as mother nature (hopefully) takes over. Follow our journey here as our plants begin to sprout…
