April 10, 2019Governor Mike DeWine has just introduced his first budget proposal since being sworn in as Governor of Ohio. While the budget will still have to work its way through the house and senate, one item of note is the proposed creation of the H2Ohio Fund.
This new fund would be administered by the Department of Agriculture, Department of Environmental Protection, and Department of Natural Resources to support best management practices and the creation of coastal and upland wetlands in the Western Basin of Lake Erie. It would also fund watershed planning, scientific research, and data collection in selected sub-watersheds. The proposal notes that the fund may also be used to fund improvements to, and for the protection of, all waterways of the state.
Initial funds would come from surplus revenue from the current budget biennium. The Governor’s budget fact sheet indicates that the H2Ohio Fund could amount to $900 million over the next 10 years.
