Roger A. Reynolds Park
11 a.m. – 2 p.m.
How many butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds can you spot?

Join us for a free, family-friendly nature adventure this fall in Hilliard!

What's a BioBlitz? A BioBlitz is like a nature treasure hunt: take as many pictures of local insects, birds and plants as you can with the iNaturalist app.

Every photo helps park managers protect the homes of our butterfly, bee and hummingbird friends.

Come chat with bug experts and biologists from ScottsMiracle-Gro, complete a scavenger hunt, color some butterfly masks and chalk the walkway with us for our pollinators!

We can't wait to see you!

How does the BioBlitz work?

Joining our BioBlitz is easy!

  • Sign up for iNaturalist. You can create a free iNaturalist account on the web here or download the app. It's available on Apple App Store or the Google Play Store by searching for "iNaturalist." If you run into issues, we'll have volunteers at the in-person event in September to help.
  • Meet us on September 28.  We'll be at Roger A. Reynolds Municipal Park  in Hilliard at the Evergreen shelter house by the pond. There's a map and address at the bottom of the page.
  • Explore the park. Look for all the pollinators and plants you can find. The pictures you take will be counted as part of our BioBlitz, and the data will help scientists study our pollinators.
  • Talk to our volunteers and experts. If you have questions, chat with a scientist from ScottsMiracle-Gro or one of the members of the Hilliard Environmental Sustainability Commission.
  • Play! Color a butterfly mask, chalk the walkway or do a scavenger hunt.

Lots of fun activities!

  • Explore the pond and community garden
  • Snap pictures of bees, butterflies and plants
  • Color pollinators in the shelter
  • Dress up as a butterfly and take a selfie
  • Chalk the walk
  • Do a scavenger hunt
  • Sample some honey
Who created the Parks for Pollinators BioBlitz program?

The National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) created the Parks for Pollinators BioBlitz program with the support of The Scotts Miracle-Gro Foundation in 2018.

The term BioBlitz has been around since 1996, and it describes a collaborative effort to find and identify as many species as possible in a specific area and time period.

There are many BioBlitz events throughout the year with many different agencies, and the NRPA chose to focus on pollinators in September.

What is the iNaturalist app?
iNaturalist is a nature app that helps you identify the plants and animals around you. By recording and sharing your observations, you create valuable data for scientists working to better understand and protect nature. Sign up for an account at the link above and explore your area! You can see how many observations have been made in Hillard this September at our project page.   .
How do I download the iNaturalist app?
You can download the free iNaturalist app from the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store by searching for "iNaturalist" in the application store.
What should I look for at the Parks for Pollinators BioBlitz?
We are looking for anything that is a pollinator or helps support pollinators. This includes:

Insects: Bees, butterflies, moths, flies, beetles, etc.
Animals: Birds, such as hummingbirds, and even bats.
Plants: Pollinator-friendly flowers, trees, and shrubs.
How do I make an observation?
Once you are in the iNaturalist app, simply follow these steps:
  1. Tap the "camera" button.
  2. Take a clear, full-frame photo of a plant, insect, or animal. The app works best with multiple photos from different angles.
  3. The app's AI will suggest an identification. You can either select one of the suggestions or enter what you think it is. It's okay if you don't know the exact species—just identifying it as a "bee" or "butterfly" is still helpful.
  4. The location and date will be automatically added to your observation.
  5. Save and share your observations. At the BioBlitz, your observations will automatically be added to the project in Hilliard.
Where and when is the BioBlitz, again?
