Hilliard to Host Post-Holiday Styrofoam Recycling Collection
November 19, 2015LED Lights – For a Brighter Green Holiday Season
December 3, 2015- Save Styrofoam packaging NOW. The Hilliard Environmental Sustainability Commission (ESC) is holding a Styrofoam recycling collection after the holidays on Saturday, January 2nd from 12-2 at the Hilliard Community Center. Styrofoam does not break down in the landfill and it takes up a lot of space in the garage can, so bring your Styrofoam to this collection. Paper, tape, and other non-Styrofoam materials should be removed and the Styrofoam should not be dirty. Packing peanuts are acceptable. Food grade (meat packaging containers, trays, cups, plates, egg carton, etc.) cannot be accepted.
- Eat local foods. Not only does eating locally help local businesses, it can benefit the environment. Local foods require less transportation and thus save energy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
- Start saving up for the Habit for Humanity ReStore collection. There will be a collection for the Habitat for Humanity ReStore at the Hilliard Earth Day celebration. Items must be reusable, structurally sound and complete, functional, cosmetically appealing, and sellable. It’s always best to reuse items instead of putting them in a landfill and it’s especially nice to give to a good cause.
- Save your old electronics for the ESC technology recycling collection at the Hilliard Earth Day celebration in April.
- Use gift bags instead of wrapping paper for gifts. Then save the bags and reuse them again next year. Not only is this good for your environment, but it is good for your wallet.
- Purchase an artificial Christmas tree. Artificial trees can be reused year after year. There is no need to purchase a new annually or go shopping for one. They are convenient and save you time, gas, and money. If you want a live tree, purchase one with a root ball that can be planted in your yard after Christmas. It is a nice way to remember the holidays long after the holiday season is over and it is great for the environment.
- Use LED lights for decorating. LED lights are more energy efficient than traditional lights which will save energy and save you some green.
- Put lights on a timer. It is so easy to forget to turn off lights with the hustle and bustle of the holiday season. If the lights are on a timer, there is no need to remember to turn them off. This saves energy and money.
- Send e-holiday cards and e-invitations. Most cards and invitations are thrown away and not always in the recycle bin. By sending e-cards and e-invitations there is no waste. There are many websites that offer free e-cards and e-invitations. Not only do you save on the cost of the card, but you save on the postage as well (and you don’t have to lick envelopes).
- Take reusable bags when you do your holiday shopping. Do your part to keep those plastic bags out of the landfill. Many stores, like Target, even give you a credit for bringing your own bag.
