January 21, 2014Meet Alissa Ziemer, owner of A-Z Window Restoration in Columbus. Two and a-half short years ago, she worked in corporate America in the field of sales and management never imaging doing anything different. One day things suddenly changed and Alissa found herself presented with the opportunity to enter the window restoration business. With a small amount of money and a strong work ethic, Alissa began a new career and she hasn’t looked back.
Alissa learned about window restoration by taking wood window restoration classes and shadowing the best artisans in the field to learn the craft. Her first job restoring windows was for a friend who had faith in her skills. The rest is history and Alissa has been busy restoring old windows in the Columbus area since 2011. In fact, things have been so successful she occasionally has to bring on additional help.
“The great thing about restoring old windows, instead of replacing them with new windows, is that they are kept out of landfills,” says Alissa. Many of the windows she restores are more than 80 years old. They can be weather-proofed and made to be energy efficient. The average new window needs to be replaced every 15-20 years and they cannot be restored, so they end up in a landfill. If you do the math, that is a lot of windows in landfills over time.
Before you decide to replace your old windows, consider restoration. It’s a great way to be environmentally conscious and maintain the character of your old home.
